Statement from Margarida Jorge, head of Lower Drug Prices Now – the leading campaign fighting to lower prescription drug prices – on President Biden’s new Executive Order on Prescription Drugs:
President Biden’s executive order will build upon the prescription drug benefits in the Inflation Reduction Act and bring some more much needed relief to patients from Big Pharma’s relentless price gouging.
The President’s executive order to rein in drug corporations’ monopoly control over prices comes in stark contrast to Senate Republicans’ introduction of legislation to repeal lower drug drug costs in the Inflation Reduction Act even before the law is implemented. Instead of working with Democrats to ensure seniors and people with disabilities get the long overdue affordable medicines they need, Republicans are focused on helping Big Pharma dodge accountability and boost profits at the expense of patients and families.
For years, politicians of both parties have talked about lowering the price of prescription drugs. But when given the opportunity to vote for Medicare negotiations, a bipartisan reform supported by over two thirds of all Americans, every Republican voted no.
It’s time for Republicans to stop putting their politics and Big Pharma donors ahead of their constituents. Instead of doing the bidding of big drug corporations, they should work with the Biden Administration and Democrats in Congress to deliver on their promises to lower drug prices.
